Lennon's back from the dead... but did he consent?

Good morning. This is Postcall, the newsletter that brings laughs, news, and spicy takes to the white coats. Pack some milk.

A new Consent to Treatment practice standard?

The Colleges are BACK with a new updated practice standard for patient consent. Let’s go!

Is this your expression?

Why? “More work needs to be done to fully understand the consent process for people in all contexts“. Basically, our history shows that those in power (either intentionally or unintentionally) fucked up.

Ok what do I do? Easy, not much is changing if you’re a good steward of patient interests. Simply:

  1. Reflect on you own personal biases

  2. Ensure these biases do not impact a patient’s autonomy of choice or reproductive decisions

  3. Ensure accountability for all members, including allied health, administrative, and other staff.

Check out this document from CPSBC for more info.

Postcall’s take: Definitely great direction by the College. And keeping steps in mind is going to be even more important as we get into sensitive courses of action like emergencies, incapable patients, involuntary admissions, and MAiD.

AI is getting crazier 🧠

The last-ever Beatles record will feature the late John Lennon’s voice extracted from an old demo using AI. WHAT? Whichever superfan did this definitely didn’t get Johnny’s consent.

Set to be released this year, it is nice to see that—even amid ongoing AI controversies—we can “Come Together’” for the technology’s musical use.

…and here’s a photo of your radiologist friend after they read that (or any) AI headline:

Show me the MONEY 💰️

If you’re looking for your latest stock pick or definitive conclusive I-shit-you-not advice on where the stock market is going… sorry. Not even those Wall Street folks (the real ones, not the redditors) know where 2023 is going.

So tip for today: just keep sticking to your tried and true dollar-cost-averaging strategy into your favourite ETF combo. And if that sentence makes no sense for you, just skim this page, open up a Questrade account for free, and start investing in your future.

In the same vein, this is also your weekly reminder to make smart purchases on your financial journey this summer:

3 Quick Bites

1: Apple released their new Vision Pro headset (Watch Verge’s video), and it’s pretty sweet. So pick up an extra couple shifts.

2: Trump pleads not guilty to… something they have an audio recording of him admitting he did.

If you haven’t heard yet, that “something” is him playing “keep-these-US-military-secret-documents-for-myself” from the FBI. Yikes, guess CYA was never in the POTUS orientation manual. (details on CNN)

3: US$500 million 🤯 . That’s the total assets and liabilities of Instant Brands, the Canadian-founded company that makes Instant Pots and Pyrex, according to its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filings (details on CBC).
